With the expectation that London is likely to outperform many other key property markets in the future, people from other regions of the world, such as South Europe and the Middle East, flock to shelter their capital in the safe political and economic haven for which London real estate is renowned.

The city and surrounding areas offer many options from detached houses with large gardens in leafy residential areas to apartments in city centre period blocks and modern sky-scrapers. Most houses come with a ‘freehold’ so the property belongs to you until you choose to sell it. Some British landowning families have owned their properties for over 1000 years!

Purchasers of apartments should employ some caution because they can be sold with a right to occupy them for as little as 2 years, although new apartments are sometimes sold with a right to occupy of 999 years. It is often possible to extend the right to live in an apartment, which we call ‘extending the leasehold’ for a pre-agreed sum. Mostly it is only possible to extend for a further 90 years, but it can be up to a maximum of only 10 years and sometimes as much as 250 years, depending on the property. Note that the fees for doing so will vary from circa £10,000 to £50,000 and above depending on the property.
